Match Report by Team Managers
Team Southampton will travel to Croydon for the last of the McCain National Young Athlete’s League fixtures on July 19 knowing that victory would give them an outside chance of clinching a top five finish – and with it a place in the national final. The team gave another spirited display in the penultimate round at Norman Park, Bromley where they would up second overall with 394 points behind the hosts Blackheath & Bromley (494).

Southampton’s under 13 girls again battled valiantly against tough opposition – performance of the day coming from Sophie Merritt with a club record 10.23 metres in the shot. Merritt also set an 800m personal best having filled in at the last minute, while Maria Cassar (75m/150m) sprinted to two pbs and Stephanie Bottell equalled her 150m best. The middle distance girls clinched 13 out of a possible 16 points with Sophie Kalik’s pb win over 1200m ably supported by seconds from 800m duo Caitlin Stewart and Merritt. Abbie Fisher also set a pb as B 1200m runner-up and there were wins for Michelle Bigg (hurdles / shot) and Bottell (long jump).

Southampton’s under 15 girl throwers had a productive day, particularly Poppy Barker whose winning 33.26m javelin mark was ten metres ahead of the rest. Last minute stand in Emma Cowell was runner up in the B javelin and also came second in the shot and third in the discus, while Hannah Brown threw a pb in the B shot (to add to one in the 800m) as did Zoe Carter in the B discus. Emily Jenkinson’s fine 1500m win was backed by Laura Seaman’s B String second, and sprinters Zoe Carter and Libbie Nunn sped to second in the A/B 200m and third in the A/B100m. The stand out performers however were Cowell and Vicky Mould in the long jump. Having increased her best of 4.77m to 4.80m in the second round, Cowell then had her club record snatched away from her by team mate Mould, who jumped 4.81m with her last attempt.

Despite several injury problems, Southampton’s under 17 women pulled together in their quest for points with nearly everyone competing in a maximum four events – some of them unfamiliar. Mhairi-Clair Stewart and Ella May bravely tackled the 300m Hurdles for the first time and Stewart also did a good job over 3000m and 1500m. Lizzie Gittens, unable to compete in her usual high jump, led the javelin with 28.13 and also made her debut in the shot and hammer. Middle distance prospect Jenny Beckingham won the 800m in 2:15.5 seconds.

Alexander Allen made it five wins out of six this season in the under 13 boys’ 800m, clocking 2:24. Also victorious for the youngest boys were Oliver Bromby (B hurdles 16.7) and Jack Pearson (B shot 6.24) and there were pbs for Pearson (1500m, 5:37), Duane Campbell (100m, 13.6) and Jamie Abrahams (200m 13.2/long jump 4.10).

Daniel Avery collected field points galore for Team Southampton under 15 boys in their Young Athletes League meeting in Bromley. He triumphed in the hammer (47.10) and discus (32.24) and finished shot runner up (9.94). He was well supported by B stringers David Fisher (1st Hammer 14.49 pb / 1st Discus 20.33) and Michael Palubicki (2nd Shot 7.66). Breno Morrall and Tom Gowans achieved English School’s qualifying times in winning the 100m (11.7) and 200m (24.1) respectively, and there were 800m firsts for Dudley Mason and David Dickins – Mason also achieving pbs in the 400m (55.1) and long jump 4.86m. Tom Stroud and Matthew Knapp completed a fine day for the middle distance runners int eh 1500m with Stroud second in 4.47 and Knapp lowering his pb by 12 seconds to win the B race in 4.48. Southampton’s 4x100m relay quartet of Calum Rowe, Gowans, Luke Hodgetts and Morrall recorded their fastest time this season in finishing second in 48.5. The 4x400m team of Rowe, Dickens, Gowans and Mason went one better, finishing first in 3:47 and lowering the previous club record by nine seconds.

Southampton’s under 17 men again encountered touch opposition, but although there was only one winner, they managed 12 second places. Simon Ninnim was the lone victor, edging a close 800m in 2:02 – the same time as the second placed athlete. Ben Winstanley quickened his 400m best to 51.8, Martin Campbell (9.51) and Joe Whelan (11.21) completed a fine second place double in the 3000m as did Chris Lang (35.44) and Dan Miller (26.79) in the javelin. Sean Adams ran well over the 100m (15.9) and 400m (61.8) hurdles and the 4x400m team of Winstanley, Miller, Campbell and Ninnim were second in 4:43.
