Match Report from the Team Managers

Team Southampton’s young athletes continued their fine start in the National Young Athletes Premier Division. In the second of five matches staged at Bromley the team were involved in a close encounter with Cambridge Harriers the hosts, Norwich, and Team Dorset. Despite missing a number of top athletes the team showed their strength in depth, willingness and team spirit to pull together to contest all events. In a topsey turvey afternoon of enthralling athletics it came down to the last event of the day to decide the eventual winners. It was left to the under 17men 4x400m relay team of Ben Winstanley, Martin Campbell, Louis Gates and Simon Ninnim to produce one of many outstanding relay races of the day. It is often said that every point counts but in this match, as the relay team crossed the line it was just half a point that separated two teams after 80 events, a day when every athlete can look back and say that their performance contributed to a memorable result.

The u13 girls encountered strong competition and had four wins on the day. There was a clean sweep in the 150m with wins for both Stephanie Bottell and Maria Cassar. In the field there were wins for Michelle Bigg in the discus and Edith Philips in the high jump. Jessica Tilt and Cerys Powell were both making their debut for Team Southampton and gave very creditable performances in the 1200m and 800m. Abbie Fisher also worked extremely hard showing how versatile she is with solid performances in the 800m, 75m hurdles, long jump and 4x100m relay.

The u15 girls competed extremely well and on the day there were 3 personal best's and five wins.

Vicky Mould and Elly Henderson won both A and B string long jump with a personal best for Vicky of 4.59m. Also Vicky and Hannah Brown won both A and B string 75m hurdles although times were slow due to the difficult conditions. The other personal best on the track was in the 800m for Laura Seaman of 2.30.1mins taking 2secs off her previous best. The blustery conditions made it hard for the sprinters but Zoe Carter, Olivia Nunn and Bushra Hall all gave creditable performances against strong opposition. In the field there was a win in the javelin for Poppy Barker and a personal best for Samantha McCann in the discus of 14.94m.

The U17 women came first in their age group by a significant margin with wins in half the events. Emily Varcoe continued her consistently high level in the throws with wins in the Discus and Shot Putt and 2nd place in the Hammer. Jenny Beckingham dominated the middle distance events against strong opposition winning both the 800m and 1500m. Lizzie Gittens also had impressive double wins in the High Jump and Javelin and there were wins for Joanne Bottell in the 200m and Melody Young in the 300m. Valuable points were gained by several athletes competing in events they were not used to and Lavinia Nkomo ran well in her first ever hurdles race. The successful afternoon was completed by an impressive win by the 4x300m relay team of Melody Young, Hannah Musker, Lavinia Nkomo and Jenny Beckingham.

For the U13 boys there was a new club record in the 75m hurdles from debutant Jack Pearson in a time of 15.7 sec. Wins for Duane Campbell in the 100m, Alexander Allen in the 800m and a clean sweep for Tom Young and William Ingram in the Shot Putt. Jamie Abrahams continued his fine start to the season running well in the 1500m finishing 2nd in 5:15. The relay team of Jimmy Bright, Oliver Bromby, Alexander Allen and Duane Campbell ran exceptionally well just being beaten on the line by one tenth of a second in another exciting relay race.

For the U15 boys Dudley Mason, voted boys athlete of the first match two weeks ago, turned in another fine 800m winning performance with an English Schools qualifying time of 2:06. He was ably backed up by David Dickins making his debut for the club winning the B race in a personal best time of 2:13. Both boys then teamed up to win the A & B string 400m. There was a fine run from Alex Ruggles in the 1500m with a time of 4.42 and Calum Rowe again showed why he is the Hampshire champion over the 80m hurdles winning in a time of 12.8. Typifying the true spirit of the team were Michael Winstanley standing in at the last minute to gain valuable points in shot putt and javelin and Luke Hodgetts taken part in the shot putt for the first time. There was a fine win for the 4x400m relay team of Calum Rowe, David Dickins, Tom Gowans, and Dudley Mason.

There was a good all round performance from the U17men.Ben Winstanley ran a pb to win the 800m in 2.04. There were double firsts for Chris Lang and Dan Miller in the high jump and Richard Humby and Chris Lang in the pole vault. In his first appearance for the club Callum Collins threw well to record 1st in the B string shot put and 2nd in the javelin. Joe Whelan picked up 4 points for his win in the B string 3000m. There was welcome return to the team for Louis Gates running well in the 1500m to finish 2nd in 4:26 .The Campbell brothers Martin and Simon again competed in the maximum number of events working hard for the team to gain 13 points between them.

The team will travel to Harrow on the 31st May for which should be another closely contested event.
