Match Report by Sue Stevens:
MATCH VICTORY FOR TEAM SOUTHAMPTON
On 14th June, a bright and sunny day saw Team Southampton travel down to Bournemouth for the third of four matches in the National Junior League. Having re-entered this league in 2009 after an absence of several years, the team was looking for its first victory, having performed extremely well in the first two matches at Portsmouth (4th) and Brighton (2nd). Despite the majority of the athletes having competed at the Hampshire Schools Competition the day before, spirits and confidence were high and the team was not to be disappointed.
The men’s team put in an outstanding effort and there were great performances all round. On the track our sprinters were in fine form, with Ross Langford winning the 100m in a pb time of 11.0 and Sam Derham leading the B string with a sb of 11.5. Success continued in the 200m with Ross Langford again coming in first in a time of 22.8 with Jacob Evans, making his debut for the club, winning the B string in a time of 22.9, having already achieved 5th in the long jump and 3rd in the shot. In the 400m another double first was achieved by Ben Parnell (50.9) and Chris Dennis (56.2). With such good results, it is no surprise that both the 4 x 100m and 4 x 400m relay teams stormed home in first place at the end of the day and maintaining their unbeaten record in the league to date. There were solid performances in the longer races too, Aaron Bennett (2.04.5) and David Bolton (2.09.0) placing 4A and 3B respectively in the 800m. Showing great team spirit, Chris Dennis stepped up from his more usual 400m to win the 1500m A string and in the B string, U17 Martin Campbell came in second (4.37.1). Martin’s twin brother, Simon Campbell, was placed third in the B string in his first ever 2k steeplechase and Alick Clark came third in the A race, as well as coming 4th in the 400m hurdles and 3rd in the 110m hurdles B race.
Another athlete competing for the first time in the Team Southampton vest was Matt Watson. Matt had a great debut, finishing 2nd in the 110 hurdles and 2nd in the triple jump, as well as jumping a massive pb in the high jump, finishing on a height of 1.96m, the qualifying standard for the English Schools Championships. Spurred on by his efforts, his team mate Sam Tingman also achieved a pb in the high jump at 1.80m, as well as winning the B string long jump with 5.65m. Sadly our A string triple jumper, Rory Constable, was injured during the warm up and we wish him well and a speedy recovery. Overall the rest of the field events went well, with last minute javelin throwers Sam Derham and Alick Clark surprising themselves with throws of 28.42m and 24.00m respectively and gaining valuable points for the team, as did Ben Parnell in the discus with a throw of 28.96m and David Bolton who won the B string hammer with 13.22m.
Not to be outdone by the men, the women rose to the occasion and, despite fielding a somewhat depleted team, managed to match the men in their efforts. Whilst not recording the same number of first places, their results were solid in the sprints. In the 100m, Ellen Cranstone (14.9) came 7th in the A string with U17 Vicki Vinter (14.6) placing 6th in the B race. Despite filling in the 200m at the last minute U17 athletes Emily Varcoe (30.7) and Nicky Humphrey (31.2), added more valuable points to the team score and U17 Jenny Beckingham, running in her first 400m race, ran a superb time of 58.5 to win overall. In the 800m and 1500m, Louise Webb achieved a fine double first, and U17 Alisha Parnell ran well to finish 2B in the 1500m. In the 3k race, U17 athletes Mhairi-Clair Stewart and Liberty Pritchard finished 3A and 1B respectively and our only hurdler of the day, Nicky Humphrey came 2nd in her first ever 400m hurdles. The women’s day on the track finished well with our best performances in the relays this season: a 4th place in the 4 x 100m and a great win in the 4 x 400m.
It was another good all round performance in the field events. In the jumps, U17 Vicki Vinter came 2nd in the A string triple jump with a distance of 9.56m and 7th in long jump. Her fellow competitor Step Coker jumped 8.78m to come 2nd in the B string triple jump and came 4th in the long jump. Our only high jumper for the women, U17 Nicky Humphrey did well to get over 1.40 and was placed 5th overall. In the throws, U17 Freya Jones was once again in outstanding form, throwing a personal best of 44.95m to win the event and confirm her place at the top of the UK U17 rankings. She was ably supported by Anna Stevens who came 4th in the B string and then went on to gain more useful points in the rest of the throws, placing 3A in hammer (28.39) 4A in discus (28.6) and 1B in shot (9.61). Hannah Ashmore threw a season’s best of 9.81m to come 3rd in the A string and U17 Emily Varcoe supported well and came 3B (22.11m) in hammer and 2B (25.87) in discus.
At the end of the day, both the men and women’s teams won their matches, resulting in an overall win for Team Southampton. The team will now go into the final match of the season in second place in the league behind Brighton.
