Match Report by Sue Stevens
Despite not being able to field a full team, partly due to last minute injuries, Team Southampton’s U20 Men and Women managed a very creditable 4th place in our first match in the National Junior League, narrowly missing out on 3rd place by just 3 points.
The day started well, with the sun shining and our first double ‘A’ and ‘B’ string win from Hannah Ashmore (9.68) and Anna Stevens (9.52) in the Shot. The women continued with a string of solid performances, some of which surprised them at this stage of the season, with Ellen Cranstone (100m) Laura Connolly (800/400m), Vicky Cronin (1500m) and Fiona James (HK, LJ & TJ). U17 Lavinia Nkomo stepped in to run her first 400m for the club, recording a time of 63.6 and 2A position. Vicki Vinter, also U17, performed well in the 100m, LJ, TJ and ran a leg of the 4 x 100 relay, where the team came in 6th. Our third U17, Freya Jones, threw an impressive 41.67m in the javelin to win the event and also Female Athlete of the Match.
Despite comments from some of the men that there were not as fit as they thought they were, they too achieved a good set of results. Our sprinters, Sam Derham, Chris Dennis and Ross Langford put in good times, with Alick Clark, our only hurdler for the day, setting his standards for the season. Harry Fisher put in a good performance to finish in the 2A position in the 1500m setting a new pb of 4:14.3 and threw a very reasonable 5th in the shot – although commented that it was somewhat heavier than he expected! David Bolton and Adam Steele got useful points in the 800m and Sam Tingman, returning from injury, jumped 11.52 in triple jump to finish 5th in the ‘A’ string. Pole vaulter Richard Humby had a somewhat stressful afternoon, with the event only managing to take place after some ingenious engineering on the part of Paul Chamberlain and the officials. Vital missing parts resulted in a ‘Heath Robinson’ type repair, but undaunted Richard managed to win the event with a convincing 4.00m. The highlight of the day for the men had to be the relays. After our 4 x 100m team stormed home to victory in an impressive 45.1sec, the 4 x 400 team were feeling the pressure. Despite great runs in the first three legs, it was neck and neck in the final home straight with Chris Dennis just managing to hold off the opposition and bring the team in first.
Thanks to all team members and officials. Let’s hope we can build on this performance and, with a full team and fair weather, improve our position in Brighton on 24th May.
