Match Report by Gareth Price:
The British Athletics League is the premier athletics club competition in the country. A competition which Team Southampton has been a proud competitor in for many years. However, in the last few seasons, a lack of athletes has seen Southampton battling to avoid relegation from the third tier. This year was no different as the team once again went into the last match in the relegation zone with the odds of survival stacked firmly against them.

After poor overall performance is the closer meets at Abingdon and Bournemouth, the situation looked bleak, as only 15 athletes and dedicated coach Terese Swain (who gave up a trip to Berlin to be there) made the long journey up to Derby to cover the 34 events (A & B strings) and 2 relays.

The day began with George Kenyon and Chris Ball putting strong performances in the Long Jump event to both finish 5th in their respective strings. At the same time Adam Richardson and Jake Lewis came 7th in the 'A' string and 6th in the 'B' string Hammer giving the team a promising start to the day. The first event on the track saw Gareth Price and Philip Coker go in the 400m Hurdles and finish an unexpected 4th and 6th boosting the team in one of their weaker track events.

The High Jump followed with 400m sprinters Paul Goodall and the Ben Parnell trying their hands at this unfamiliar event. Both performed laudably and finished in 7th place in both strings. The 800m presented Southampton with their first opportunity for big points as John Slade's impressive sprint finish gained him a 3rd place finish in a time of 1.55.58. Gareth Beech also finished 3rd in the 'B' String with a very creditable 1.56.44. The Discus competition took place outside the stadium and saw Adam and Jake both finish 7th earning more valuable points.

In the 100m Ben Richardson was pipped at the post, finishing 2nd in 11.02s. George Kenyon looked relaxed as he controlled the 'B' string race winning in 11.11s. John Slade and Aaron Bennett, who made his debut for the BAL team, braved the 3000m steeplechase fighting off the rival Bournemouth athletes for some much needed points. Chris Ball showed his experience in the triple jump, hauling himself into a well deserved 6th place as Gareth Price finished 4th in the 'B' competition.

Ben Richardson has been dominant all season in the 110 hurdles and was once again, winning despite knocking over 8 of the 10 barriers. He was ably supported by Coker who skilfully avoided a falling athlete to come home in 5th place. The Pole Vault, a potential banana skin was filled in by Jake Lewis and Ben Parnell who impressed to come 6th and 5th respectively. Jake then jogged over to the Javelin where he threw 48.33m to take 3rd place. Adam Richardson also gained another much needed point.

The team then gave some excellent performances on the track with Paul Goodall almost breaking the 48 second barrier to win the 400m in 48.01s. Darryn Campbell ran a storming first 200 to come home in 3rd in the 'B' race in 49.63 ending a very successful season for the athlete. In the 1500m Gareth Kaplan and Martin Johnson finished 6th and 5th whilst in the 200m Ben Richardson finished 4th in despite pulling a muscle 20m from the line, a tremendous show of team spirit. Ben Parnell continued his good vein of form in the event coming 3rd in the second string in 22.45s.

The loss of Ben Richardson was bad news for Southampton's sprint relay team but the athlete bravely managed to join his brother Adam in the Shot Put circle with both gaining a decent 7th place. The ever unpopular 5000m was filled by Alex Wall-Clarke (7th) and Martin Johnson (6th) giving Southampton a good chance of avoiding the drop, depending on the success of the relay squads.

The 4x100m team without star sprinter Ben Richardson rose to the challenge superbly. George Kenyon go the squad off to a flyer handing over to Ben Parnell who strode past Cambridge and Bedford on the back straight. Darryn Campbell ran a superb top bend handing over to Gareth Price who was just near enough to be able to run down the Derby athlete for the win in a new club record of 42.72s.

Parnell and Campbell then competed in the 4x400m where Campbell's 50.1s first leg put the team in command of the race. John Slade somehow found a 49.6s 400m in his legs after competing in both the 800m and the steeplechase earlier. Ben Parnell successfully defend the lead with an impressive 49.8s and Paul Goodall brought the team home in first with an incredible 47.6s leg. Not only did this victory ensure Southampton future in Divisions 3 but the team also smashed the club record by almost 3 seconds bringing the baton home in 3.17.1.

In the end the 15 athletes, all of whom had sacrificed their bodies and/or their favoured events did enough, finishing 4th on the day and raising the team to 5th overall allowing them to enjoy another season of high class competition, maintaining the club's good name as they went.
