Event Report

Southampton AC had a magnificent Hampshire Cross Country championships coming away with 5 team and 3 individual medals. The weather was perfect for cross country running with fine & mild over ground weather and soft underfoot conditions meaning there were some muddy athletes coming home at the finish.

The gold medal winners were the mens senior team whose 6 scoring athletes came home with 100 points, 1 point clear of Winchester AC. The scoring athletes were Steven Phillips who finished just out of the medals in 4th, Matthew Bennett in 10th, Tim Spencer in 15th, Jamie Knapp 20th, Tom Muddiman in 25th and Matt Hibberd in 26th. Also to compete for Southampton were Graham Fisher 28th, Russ Osborn 29th, Peter Hart 30th, Matthew Revier 33rd, Jonathan Quint 34th, Stuart Hicks 38th, Tim Sherman 47th, James Smith 53rd, Michael Tanner 55th, Peter Costley 66th, Jim Bennett 99th and Keith Hollis 130th.

Ceri Mitchell had a fine run to finish 2nd in the senior womens race just 14 seconds behind Olympic hopeful Louise Damen. The womens team took the bronze medal with the 3 scoring runners behind Ceri being Laura Brenton in 10th, Nicci Blandford in 20th and Laura Connolly 37th. In the u20 womens race, Katie Hickson was 4th and Mhairi-Clair Stewart was 5th.

The young athletes had a magnificent championship with George Butler taking the silver medal in the U15 boys race. He was ably backed up by Lucas Clements in 8th, Jamie Abrahams 11th & Alex Prinsep in 20th all of whom ran fine races to see the boys team home 2nd, an agonising point behind the City of Portsmouth AC. Adam Coffin was 25th & Matt Abbott was 36th.

The u13 boys team took the team bronze medal packing all 4 boys in the top 25 with Sam Costley in 10th, Luke Powell 13th, Owen Lawrence 14th and Blake Miller 23rd.

The U17 men finished just out of the medals in 4th place with Niall Holt 14th, Amarpal Gill in 20th, David Fisher 21st and Jack Lynch 24th.

For the girls, Lizzie Payne ran a great race to come home 3rd in the U13 age group. Lizzie is still young enough to come back in the same age group next year. She was followed home by Jessie Tucker in 18th, Rosie Lynch in 23rd and Aimee Coppin in 29th which saw the girls finishing out of the medals by just a point in 4th place. Holly Powell was next to finish making a fine U13 debut in 31st place, Elizabeth Curzen did well to recover from a fall in 39th place & Eleanor Prinsep was 46th.

The U15 girls took the silver medal again falling just a point short of the gold despite all 4 scoring girls coming in the top 15. Caitlin Stewart ran a good race in 6th place, likewise Abbie Fisher in 8th. Briallen Taylor was next to finish in 11th and Alana Spiers was 15th. Anna Sharp continues to improve and finished 22nd.

In the U17 womens race, Frances Arnott was 8th.
