Race Report
by Owen Haries
With both a new bike and lightweight running shoes to try out I was looking forward to this event. Despite an early morning chill by the time of the race start temperatures has risen nicely and the sun shone, add in only a very light breaze and conditions were just about perfect. All of the legs were laps of the Goodwood motor racing circuit with distances of 4km run (1 lap), then a 40km cycle and an 8km run to finish off. There was also a shorter race of 4km / 20km / 4km taking place at the same time.
After giving the short race starters a 3 min head start we lined up at pole position on the grid (no qualifying laps had been needed). From the gun a breakaway group formed but I didn't feel the urge to give chase at this point. After about half a lap we started catching the tail enders of the short course competitors and from this point on it became more difficult to tell where you were in relation to others in the race. Transition one from run and onto the bike for once went smoothly for me and it was time to start the bike leg.
After suffering all through the winter on icy and potholed roads the smooth even surface of the race course was a revelation. Not having to worry about cars, lorries and other motorised was a very pleasant change as well. The only internal combustion engines in evidence were the light aircraft landing and taking off from the airfield we were circling. Once out on the bike we could settle into a rhythm and count down the 10 laps. The bike was working well and feeing comfortable, I could keep my aerodynamic position pretty much throughout and pick my way past slower riders. Drafting (following close behind) other riders is not allowed in duathlons but the wide circuit made it possible to stay legal without to much trouble. Pretty soon we were on the last lap and it was time to come into the pits for the 2nd run.
The first km of running off the bike always feels strange while the legs adjust to the new movement. By this point things are getting quite spread out and my nearest competitor is quite a way away. Don't seem to be catching him fast enough but then realise we are both taking time out of a couple of others which we both pass before the finish.
The whole event was well organised and run by Porthmouth Triathletes, Goodwood circuit was a great location for the event and I would definatly try and do this event again.
