Farley Mount XC
11th October 2008

Match Report By Des Webb

Team Southampton fielded a large number of runners for the first Hampshire Cross Country League at Farley Mount this weekend where a number of athletes sparkled in the bright summer like sunshine. In fact the team got off to a flying start when young runner Emily Jenkinson, coached by Pete Haynes, came in first place in the U13 girls race to kick off the season in style. Jenkinson took the lead early on and maintained her first place right to the finish. She was ably supported by Sophie kalik who recovered well from an early fall in the race to take 4th place overall and give the team a second place finish overall just one tantilising point behind the strong Aldershot farnham and district team. Caitlin Stewart completed the three scorers in 10th place and debutant and sister of Sophie, Phoebe Kalik tool a very respectable 11th place.

Also running well was Jenny Beckingham in the u17 girls race where she worked her way through the field after a steady start to come in 3rd place overall, behind the winner and her training partner Louisa Warwick, running for Winchester, but also coached like Jenny by Team Southampton's Michael Coker. The U17 girls team took third place with Laura Connolly (12th) and Rachel Weager (22nd) making up the scorers on the day for Team Southampton.

In the senior women it was Ceri Mitchell who took highest place for the club with a creditable 7th place which was an excellent result in a very strong field packed with a number of GB senior and junior internationals from Aldershot and Winchester. Laura Brenton also ran well for 15th place and Sophie Hall (31st) showed a good return to form promising well for the winter season to come and giving the women a 3rd place team position after the first race.

In the Senior men in a huge field of over 200 runners it was John Brown who took top scoring place for the club in 15th place being closely followed by previous league winner Neil Phillips in 17th place on what proved to be trying conditions due to the humidity and heat on the day. Despite that the senior mens team still took a strong third team place finish. however a number of athletes were forced by the conditions to drop out on this hilly and testing course in the younger age groups especially with only 2 of the 5 u17 team being able to finish.

The u13 boys team did put up a good fight though and the team came in second place after being led home by Alex Ruggles in 8th place and Ben Rovell in 10th place, with Zac Peress completing the team scorers in 16th place.

The clubs runners will now go onto the National Road relays at Sutton Coldfield this weekend where the u13 girls team in particular will hope to match the success that they achieved at the southern Road relays where they took third place out of a huge field of teams after finishing only narrowly behind the winning Aldershot team. The Cross country season will resume at Goodwood on 8th November. Anyone interested in joining the club for the winter season should contact Fiona or Des webb on 02380788874
