Hampshire Cross Country League
Race 4: Prospect Park
12th January 2008

Match Report By Des Webb
Team Southampton cross country runners put in some fine performances at the latest Hampshire Cross Country League fixture at Reading's Prospect park.

The day started well for the team as early as the first race of the day when youngster Emily Jenkinson produced her highest league finish of the season so far when she ran a very sensible tactical race in the U13 girls race. Starting off steadily Emily picked he way through the field over the second half of the course to overhaul two runners in the final straight and finish in 2nd place. She led her team to second place overall with Daena Bennett (7th) and Caitlin Stewart (9th) also scoring for the team this time. Laura Seaman (16th), Nichole Dally (28th) and Eliza Reynolds (52nd) also ran well for the club in the age group.

In the older age groups it was Vicki Cronin who took 3rd place in the u17 women's race and Jamie Knapp in the U17 mens race who also shone for the club. Knapp took a good second place as well but ran a different race after taking second place about half way through and holding on over the remainder of the tough muddy park course. Chris Dennis came in 10th place overall showing a return to excellent form and Martin Nottingham took 13th to complete the scorers on the day. Other runners in the age group included Aaron Bennett 19th, Scott Legg 24th, and Harry Fisher 30th.

In the seniors Neil Phillips ran extremely well this week after a tough Hampshire championship the week before that had been affected by a busy Christmas when his training schedule had been put under pressure from work commitments. Phillips took a good 4th place on this sunny but cold day in reading and finished just ahead of team mate Gareth Klepacz (6th). Also running well were John Quint (18th), Christian Folliot (28th) and Jon Slade (34th)

The clubs younger runners will now be looking forward to competing in the Hampshire schools championships at Gang Warily this coming saturday (19th Jan) and the seniors and juniors will hope to keep up their good performances at the South of England championships on the 26th January at london's Parliament Hill course
