Southern Road Relays
Aldershot Rushmoor Arena
24th September 2006

Match Report by Des Webb:
Team Southampton's young athletes performed well at the Southern Road Relays that were held at Rushmoor Arena on Sunday 24th September. The event starts off the winter season and draws a large number of entries from right across Southern England including clubs from as far away as Cornwall and Norfolk.

Top performers for the club on the day in the sunny conditions that prevailed, were the U17 womens team who managed to obtain a bronze team medal after a remarkable chase over the last two legs of their race. First off for the Team was Kay Shafford who competed strongly, completing her 3km leg of the race in 12mins 51 seconds and putting the team into 34th position. Next off was Rebecca Gough who raced through the field picking off the other teams and in the process running the 5th fastest individual time of the day (10 mins 35 seconds) in her age group to move the team up into a competitive 7th position. She handed over to Louise Webb who then managed to pick off another 4 runners to move the Team into a medal place, and also in the process running a very fast time (6th fastest on the day) of 10 mins and 36 seconds.

Also running well for the club were the U13 girls team. They ran over a shorter 2.3km course and consisted of Mhairi-Clair Stewart on the first leg (9 mins 10 secs), Nicky Humphrey (9 mins 4 secs) on the second leg and the young Laura Seaman (9 mins 22 secs) who brought the team in home in 11th position out of a field of around 60 teams.

In the boys it was the U13 boys who managed the top boys team finishing position of 13th with the team consisting of 4 runners rather than the three for the girls teams. Simon Campbell led them off well in 11mins 31 secs and Robert Galbenu (12 mins 54 secs), Max Costley (12 mins 1 sec) and Martin Campbell (12 mins 34 secs) completed the fine team performance.

The U15 boys team did almost as well coming in a creditable 14th placed position, with Martin Nottingham (10 mins 13), Simon Ninnim (10 mins 30 secs), Harry Fisher (11 mins 28secs) and Aaron Bennett (10 mins 56 secs) making up the A team.

In the other age groups there were some very good individual performances with Jenny Beckingham posting the quickest time of the Team Southampton U15 girls in 12 mins and 32 seconds, and Scott Gallant posting the fastest time for the club in the u17 boys race of 13 mins and 10 seconds over a 4km course in that age group.

The club starts off its cross country season on 7th October with the first Hampshire league fixture at Farley Mount, Winchester.
