Hampshire Cross Country League
Race 4: Reading
13th January 2007

Match Report, By Des Webb:
Team Southampton's runners turned out again in wet and blustery conditions for the second time in consecutive weekends, this time for the 4th fixture in the hampshire Cross country League.

Top individual performance of the day again went to Neil Phillips in the Senior mens race when he managed to come in second place and lead the mens team to a 5th place overall. Neil ran much of the course with the eventual winner before being pipped to the victory over the closing stages. Also performing well in the senior mens race, which consisted over over 150 competitors, was J Qunint in 9th and Russell Osborn who came in 29th place, just ahead of Neil Wright in 31st. In the Senior Womens race Hayley Pointer again ran well to take 7th place and Helen Warner came in 32nd.

In the junior age groups there were fine turn outs from the youngest runners in the U13's age group with the girls again being led home by Mhairi-Clair Stewart in 4th place, who'd recovered well from illness that had hampered her run in the Hampshire Championships the week before. She was backed up well by the rest of the team who came in 2nd place overall on the day. In the U13 boys it was the turn of Martin Campbell who came in 8th to lead the team home, this time ahead of brother Simon who battled to finish in 20th place. max Costley was 25th and debutant Alex Ruggles, just old enough to compete ran well to finish in 29th place.

Other notable runs came in the U17 boys race where Jamie Knapp continued a good season to finish in 4th place with Chris Dennis second in for the club in 13th, and in the U15 boys, Simon Nimmin who took 9th place position and led that team to 5th place overall on the day. The teams performance was slightly hampered by a fall at the start where Aaron Bennett was tripped and fellow teammate Martin Nottingham stopped to assist but in doing so collided with another Team Southampton runner Louis gates causing a minor pile up at the start.

The team's next fixtures include the South of England Championships at the end of the month in Norfolk followed by the last of the hampshire league fixtures in early February.
