Team Southampton performed well right across the age groups on Saturday in the second of the Hampshire cross country league fixtures at Goodwood. In the final event of the day, the Senior men's race, Neil Phillips attacked the hilly course and blustery conditions with vigour to secure his highest place so far in the league this season with a 4th place finish. He was ably supported by Ben Ivorson, Russell Osborn, J Brown and Nigel Wright to carry the team to a very creditable 3rd place overall in the first division of the men's league, on a day when the club fielded 11 competitors in the combined Senior/U20/Vets race.
The day had however already started off well with the U13's age group where Connor Newman ran a very strong race to come home well clear of the second place runner and take individual victory for the boys. The team did very well and came second due to the fine runs by the Cambell brothers Martin and Simon in 9th and 15th places respectively and Max Costley in 13th. In the girls race in the same age group top Team Southampton runner on the day was Mhairi-Clair Stewart who despite illness earlier in the week finished with her highest placed league position this season in 5th. Emily Jenkinson (9th) and Laura Seaman (12th) helped clinch second place overall for the team, which promises much for the future as both are young for the age Group.
In the U15's it was Louis Gates in the boys who came in first for the club in a fine 8th position. He was backed up well by Simon Nimmin in 20th position and Aaron Bennett in 22nd.
In the U17 mens race Jamie Knapp had a great run to take 4th place having vied for 3rd place for a long part of the race and only just being pipped over the final run in. Chris Dennis ran well to finish in 15th place and Scott Gallant made up the third scoring team member finishing in 21st place to give this team a second place overall.
In the combined Senior/U20 and Vets womens race there was a very powerful run by Rebecca Gough who tracked a number of quality internationals from Aldershot to finish in a very creditable 7th place overall. Hayley Pointer also ran very well to complete her run on a very cold and blustery day to finish in 14th place and Charlotte Benning in 35th place was third scorer for the U20 team.
The club will be in action again next at the Wessex League fixture at Newbury on the 26th November and then again in the hampshire League at Overton on the 2nd December. Click photos below for larger images.
