Team Southampton had a large group of athletes representing Hampshire at the UK inter-counties championships at Wollaton Park on Saturday and a number of them produced great performances for the county on the day.

Angus MacLean produced a fine run in the Men's short 4km course invitation race when he took a top 3 place. However in an extremly close finish he was only a stride away from first place as all the top three finishers had the same time given them as they crossed the line.

Also running well in the younger age group races were Rebecca Gough and Louise Webb who were both 5th placed finishers in their age group races. Gough showed a real return to form after suffering from illness earlier in the season when she ran a strong race to secure the top 10 finish in a classy U17 girls field. Webb also produced the goods on the day in a very tightly fought competition in the U15 girls race after finding herself in a pack of 7 runners who were clear of the 300+ field of runners at the start of the finishing straight. Webb took 5th place in the final run in and was a tantilising 3 seconds behind the bronze place runner. Coincidently both Webb and Gough managed to secure overall 4th places in the Reebok cross challenge national cross country league in their different age groups as a result of their performances at Nottingham and over the season.

Fellow Team Southampton runners Charlotte Benning and Hayley Pointer also ran well in the Under 17 girls age group race and in the process, together with Gough helped Hampshire to win a bronze team medal in the age group.

The club's other runners included 4 of the 8 county representatives in the U15 boys team. They included Scott Legg (72nd), Jamie Knapp (84th), Chris Dennis (92nd) and Peter Batten. Also running were Mhairi-Clair Stewart (78th) in the U13 girls race, Oli Williams in the U20 mens race, John Beattie in the Senior men's long course race, and Lucy Bowers in the U20 womens race.
