Over the Wall Opportunities

Running & Volunteering Opportunities

Long time club athlete Tom Berry brings you information about the 'Over the Wall' charity he is involved with:

"We provide residential activity camps for children affected by serious illnesses. These children frequently lack confidence as a result of prolonged, painful and isolating treatment in hospitals. At camp we create a friendly and positive environment where the children can behave like just children and not ill children. Our campers take part in countless activities ranging from archery and rock-climbing to fancy-dress parties and craft lessons. In the presence of others facing similar challenges, feelings of isolation are overcome, self-esteem grows and lasting friendships are made."

We hold these camps in Dorset, the Midlands and Perth (Scotland).

Like most charities, we make quite a bit of money through running events. Here is a list of the events we have guaranteed places for in 2008:

London Marathon13th April1 place left
British London 10k6th July11 places left

Over The Wall is a great charity and we have lots of really good volunteering opportunities for young people, so I thought that some of the club athletes might be interested in hearing about it. Basically, for every child we take to a camp (around 60 for one week) we take a volunteer to help out. It’s really good fun, the volunteers get to muck in with all the activities and there is a really good social atmosphere too. Most of our volunteers are University students. The camps take place during holidays and cost the volunteers absolutely nothing! Even travel expenses are paid for and it also looks great on your CV.
